Precious Moments

Under the Tuscan SunEat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and IndonesiaWith all the renewed interest of Eat Pray Love (because of the movie), I'm wondering if I need to embark on an international journey in order to find myself. And will it be the same self that I could have found, in say, Hillsborough, Texas or Willacoochee, Georgia? Through out history, enlightenment has come from those who have travelled and become exposed to a different culture (or at least new spices). What to become of those of us who only have about 2 hours to spare and $5.99;  is there a Light of Truth in our future? Or like in Under the Tuscan Sun, is there a villa, new friends and an odd relationship with a silent old man? Who are the people that get to have these experiences? Overworked mothers or stressed out fathers?

Now, I'm not knocking the experience that people have when they open themselves up to the possibility of love and change, but when to we celebrate the beauty of everyday enlightenment? Have you ever been riding in a car and heard a song that made you pull over to the side of the road and pray? Was the song The Best in Me by Marvin Sapp or The Battle is Not Yours by Yolanda Adams? What about when you saw a reproduction of Michelangelo's Pieta?  I, like anyone else, would love to travel the world in search of a great, eye-opening moment. But where will the money come from? Who will be there to babysit and pay the light bill? Since, I'm a but a working, single mother, I will appreciate those wonderful FREE moments that come when you least expect them.

Whiplash (FBI Thriller, #14)Whiplash by Catherine Coulter

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Catherine Coulter continues to deliver with Whiplash, the 14th installment in her FBI series. This time Savich, Sherlock, and a group of unconventional law enforcers track down a link between a murder and dwindling supplies of a crucial cancer drug. And as always, there's a little something extra for readers to chew on while trying to solve the mystery right along side the Dynamic Duo.

Every time a new FBI novel comes out, I want to go back and re-read the previous ones; they're just that good. I have to say that I buy Coulter's books just on the strength of previous books, so sometimes I'm not sure that I will even like the new book. However, each time I'm reminded about why she's had so many books on the NYT Bestsellers list and continues to have her books in print.

Meg Benjamin and Konigsburg, Texas

Venus in Blue Jeans: Konigsburg, Texas Book 1Last week I downloaded Venus in Blue Jeans: Konigsburg, Texas Book 1 from Amazon as a free read. I loved it right from the beginning. Big, burly vet is knocked flat on his ass by a tall, red-headed bookseller. The boy-meets-girl plot is simple enough but what Benjamin manages to do with it is great. Added to the comic love story is a needy Chihuhua, demon feline, and the inhabitants of the local watering hole who all pitch in the complicate the lives of Cal and Docia.
To be honest, it's very rare that I read the follow-up books from a free read but this one really made me want to see what happened next with the Tolefson brothers. Yes, there are four of them and all equally giangantic. Wedding Bell Blues features brother Pete, a tired county attorney who comes to Konigsburg for a wedding and some time off and gets way more than that. Next is Lars in Be My Baby,  who as an accountant, would seem to be the staid one but turns out to be a hot item on the circuit. The last book is about blacksheep oldest brother Erik. Long Time Gone wraps up the series with the the family finally getting back together after years of distance.
As a whole, the series was quite entertaining but I think it seemed "incomplete". There are some serious conflicts with criminals in all four books that are never brought to justice and since those elements were essential to the action in the books, I felt that it should have been wrapped up in a neater package. But, I likes them anyway.

Movie: Jelly

Netflix is the best. I just saw a movie called Jelly (streaming through Netflix) about a young woman who is obsessed with the John Hughes kind of love. The entire movie is a cliche about unrequited love, best friends, and being an ugly duckling, but then it was intened to be this way. (There's even a fairy godmother, in the form of a puedo-Hispanic hot chick).
This is one of those movies that I would never have seen had it not been for Netflix. Sarah Louise Wilson wrote, co-produced and starred in this uber cute movie. I knew how t would end but there were some interesting moments along the way.

read the prequel novella for this book as a free download from Amazon Kindle. Pretty good. Would be worth reading the complete series.
