The McKettrick's: Garrett

Just finished reading Linda Lael Miller's latest installment in one of the hottest families in all of romance: The McKettrick's. These guys have been sexy for more than 100 years and Garrett is right there at the top of the heap.

McKettricks of Texas: Garrett (Hqn)Quickie Plot:  Garrett is having some serious on the job trouble and needs to get away. So he goes home and finds his new sister-in-law's sister living at the old homestead. Julie and her son have moved into the mansion at the Silver Spur to solve their temporary housing problem. There's a lot of falling in love going on but you'll have to read the book to find out who falls for whom first. And in the middle of all of it is Garrett's political career, Julie's ex, and Garrett's younger brother Justin.

This is good and the model on the cover is almost worth the price of the book alone!

Universal Pain

Tonight on a Dallas CBS affiliate ran a story about a Parisian Jewish woman who hid her heritage for over 60 years. Her father was killed at Auschwitz in 1942 and she was a member of the Resistance but after the end of the war married an American soldier who told her to keep her religion a secret. And she did so for 67 years. She lived and prospered in Texas where outsiders would not have been at all welcomed and all the while smiling through the pain. To have to bear that kind of pain is a burden I could not imagine having to live with.  Although, she presented herself as a Christian woman for so many years, a few of her children have decided to embrace their Jewish faith. I can only imagine what this woman had to endure, having lived through the German occupation and then living in the American South; I only have limited experience with outright racism and discrimination though I still carry around that yoke everyday.

A professor in college once told the class that no one knows what it's like to come from a family of slaves. Imagine me in that room with 99% non-Black students and a European teacher telling me about slavery. That class that night was Early American Literature, which I hated because of the racial connotations found in the genre. She looked me in my face, as if to gauge my reaction and then she explained:  she was born in Russia, the grand daughter of a Russian slave. So she did know what I felt. I then realized that I didn't own the phantom memories of my ancestors; that people of African descent weren't the only people who wear their pain like badges. In this we are all the same and it is a humbling lesson to learn.

And on a lighter note....

The progression of my current reading list is as follows...

Savor the Moment by Nora Roberts. I am finished with with book and even had enough left to go back a re-read the previous novel in the quad, Bed of Roses.

Currently on page 43 of Beatrice and Virgil by Yann Martel. (Martel being the genius behind Life of Pi). I started not to read this one because of the confusion with the whole stuffed animal thing and then I read someone's review and found that it's an allegory for the Holocaust. I really want to see how he pulls this one off.

Courtesy of Goodreads.com and J.J. Murray, I am the proud winner of a copy of his latest work, The Real Thing. This book was on a short list, so I'm glad I won it before I bought it.

I'm sure there will be various other books that I add to this list and never get around to reading. So....

I need a vacation

I need a vacation from....(drum roll)....family. I'm thinking five or six years wouldn't be too bad. With graduations and etc, in between to break the monotony of having a life to yourself. Some remote place like NYC would be best; the quiet and the peace you could gain from residing in a city where no one cares enough to get on your nerves sounds really attractive.
